The Latest Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Discussions Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times

Recently, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but includes several key changes:

  • Every squad includes only 8 human participants, with the remaining filled by AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities done by human gamers award complete experience points, while AI activities offer reduced XP.
  • Just a pair of locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
  • Features like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.

So essentially, the playlist lives up to its name: it offers a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it gives more options for players seeking different ways to have fun with the game. But, if video games has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 fans are mad.

Player Reactions: Anger to Support

"People want human opponents. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this game," while someone else details everything they believe to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

However, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states a different comment. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," while someone else applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Constructive Criticisms and Community Input

Despite the support, players have valid points to complain about the new mode. A few folks have highlighted that it will make queue times even longer for other modes because of the sheer number of options currently available. Similarly, certain regions already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Finally, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer full XP, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to eliminate bot farms from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough feels like the player base compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the developers "making a mistake significantly, I experienced so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?

If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Tasks being too difficult were adjusted very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data shows this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
