The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
