Former UK Serviceman Accused of Murdering Kenya Woman Appears in Court

A suspect has been presented in court as deportation processes commenced in the legal matter of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan woman who was killed near a UK military installation in the year 2012.

Robert Purkiss, 38 years old, who is originally from Greater Manchester region, was presented at the magistrates' court in Westminster on Friday, and stated to the court he intended to contest the deportation. Sources suggest that he was detained on Thursday night.

An arrest warrant for the defendant was issued by a Nairobi court in September. Legal prosecutors stated before the Kenyan court that the individual had been accused of a sole charge, of murder, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to answer to accusations.

The defendant was once employed as a medical attendant with the Lancaster Regiment, the infantry regiment for the English northwest, including on tours of Afghanistan.

The victim, 21 years old, a beautician who had a baby daughter, vanished after a night on the town, and her body was discovered two months later in the premises of the lodging where she had previously spotted.

Not a single person had before been detained or charged in relation to her demise. His detention followed a fresh police investigation, which was initiated after a exposé in 2021 by a Sunday newspaper, in which the media outlet contacted several serving and ex-military personnel in the military group.

The probe has been headed by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral security treaty, retains jurisdiction in the matter.
